Zusammenfassung

Virale Infektionen des Nervensystems sind häufig ein neurologischer Notfall und differenzialdiagnostisch anspruchsvoll und können durch eine Vielzahl von Erregern ausgelöst werden. Die rasche Diagnose und anschließende Therapie sind entscheidend für die Prognose des Patienten. Bakterielle Entzündungen des Nervensystems sind oft akut und lebensbedrohlich und erfordern unmittelbare Diagnose und Behandlung. Pilzinfektionen des zentralen Nervensystem (ZNS-Mykosen) finden sich oft bei Menschen mit angeborener oder erworbener Immunschwäche (z. B. HIV-Infektion, Diabetes mellitus oder Niereninsuffizienz) oder unter Behandlung mit immunsuppressiven Therapeutika (z. B. Chemotherapie oder nach Organtransplantation). Prionerkrankungen kommen beim Menschen als sporadische, erworbene und genetische Formen vor. Parasitäre Infektionserkrankungen des zentralen Nervensystems (ZNS) sind mannigfaltig und sowohl vom Erregerspektrum als auch von den unterschiedlichen Symptomen hochkomplex. Parasitäre Erkrankungen können sowohl als Meningitis, als Meningoenzephalitis, als reine Enzephalitis oder als Myelitis auftreten. In diesem Kapitel werden übersichtlich die wichtigsten bakteriellen, viralen, parasitären, Prion- und Pilzinfektionen beschrieben.
