Suspected focal infection or inflammation is a challenging medical problem, especially in fever of unknown origin (FUO). In 1961, Petersdorf and Beeson formulated the classical definition of FUO: an illness of more than three weeks’ duration with fever higher than 38.3°C (101°F) on several occasions, and diagnosis uncertain after one week of study in the hospital. In 1992, the requirement that the evaluation must take place in the hospital was removed and immunocompromised patients were excluded, since these patients need an entirely different diagnostic and therapeutic approach [1]. …
