I was delighted to be asked to act as guest editor for this special edition of Springer Seminars in Immunopathology on the subject of Glomerulonephritis (GN), an area where there are important overlapping interests between basic immunologists, clinical researchers and clinicians involved in the diagnosis and management of kidney disease. There have been major recent advances in the understanding of GN, with the precise relationships between the immune system and injury to the kidney being clarified in ever greater detail. I have commissioned articles from leading experts in the field in two broad parts: first, a series of articles on different cellular or soluble compartments of the immune system highlighting their involvement in GN, and second, articles on the more common clinical conditions recognised in human patients. In both sections, implications for current and future therapies are considered, but the authors were asked to focus on pathogenetic mechanisms, not on clinical management. …
