In this issue of CVIR, Maxwell et al. [
1] elucidate that radioembolization outcomes can be improved by optimizing
90Y-loaded microsphere density (i.e., the number of microspheres deposited per unit treated volume). Specifically, they claim that patients with hypervascular tumors will respond better to a low microsphere density radioembolization, typically achieved with glass microspheres, and patients with less vascular tumors will benefit more from a high microsphere density radioembolization, typically achieved with resin microspheres. Therefore, this study could be seen as a tumor vascularity-based criterion to choose between resin and glass microspheres. …
