Advanced laparoscopic procedures such as esophagectomy, gastrectomy, pancreatectomy, and hepatectomy have been described extensively in the literature [

4]. However, they are usually performed by or under the guidance of an established laparoscopic surgeon several years out of training. Rarely are they performed by surgeons within the first year out of fellowship due to the advanced nature of the procedure, lack of extensive open surgical experience should the need to convert arise, and the inability to garner these consultations early in one’s career. On the other hand, an established surgeon may routinely perform these operations by the classic open technique, but may be unable to perform these through a minimally invasive approach because of more limited laparoscopic experience. …
