Zusammenfassung

Hyponatriämie (Natrium < 135 mmol/l) ist die häufigste Elektrolytstörung. Trotz gleicher Serumkonzentrationen kann die klinische Symptomatologie interindividuell von mild bis lebensbedrohend stark schwanken. Dementsprechend benötigen einzelne Patienten eine unmittelbare aktive Behandlung, während der Großteil der (meist oligosymptomatischen) Patienten zunächst eine differenzierte Diagnostik erfahren sollte. Das wesentlichste Element ist dabei die Beurteilung der klinischen Situation des Patienten und niemals isolierter laborchemischer Konstellationen: „Treat the patient, not the numbers.“
