We have with great interest read the paper by Ziegler et al. published in the February 2004 issue of the Annals of Hematology [
1]. The objective of the paper was to describe whether systemic inflammation, represented by C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, influences the antiplatelet efficacy of aspirin therapy in patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD). This is a highly relevant topic since earlier studies have demonstrated that the platelet-inhibiting effect of aspirin is subject to high interindividual and intraindividual variability [

3]. Systemic inflammation affecting platelet function might therefore be a reason for some of this variation. …
