In the UK during the COVID pandemic, IR confirmed its vital role in improving outcomes and saving lives, often in very sick patients [
1]. However, as in other countries, the success of IR has been accompanied by several unprecedented threats and challenges including increased clinical responsibilities, workload, workforce shortages, competition as well as lack of appropriate recognition. A lack of visibility has resulted in limited investment and variable access to important facilities such as clinic space, inpatient beds, and dedicated day case facilities. The European guidelines on clinical practice for IRs which have just been published [
1], along with a British Society of Interventional Radiology (BSIR) document currently being developed on day case facilities and inpatient bed access, will provide some support to IR units struggling with these day-to-day challenges. …
