Myositis ossificans of the lateral pterygoid muscle is a largely underreported and vaguely understood pathological entity in literature. The etiology is commonly attributed to a concealed trauma leading to hemorrhage in the muscular tissue, which after organization leads to ossification. Currently, there are no established treatment protocols for surgical intervention, surgical timing, recurrence rates, and effectiveness of nonsurgical therapies. We present a case of classic variant of myositis ossificans of the lateral pterygoid muscle that led to total closure of the jaws within a matter of weeks. In literature, a total of four cases involving lateral pterygoid muscle have been described, with the present case report being the first in which a mandibular swing approach was utilized as a definitive treatment modality. …
