Maintenance of skeletal muscle mass is crucial for healthy aging. Long periods of inactivity result in skeletal muscle atrophy and may be followed by incomplete recovery, for instance, after hospital stays. Repeated periods of inactivity accelerate skeletal muscle atrophy and deteriorate lifestyle by increasing the risk of falls and leading to loss of independence (Booth et al.
