We read with great pleasure the paper by D. Yip et al. [
1] illustrating the advantages of mushroom retained gastrostomy tubes. It mirrors our own experience with different gastrostomy techniques [
2] and in our practice mushroom retained tubes have completely superseded conventional Cope-loop gastrostomy tubes. Initially regarded as a fall-back approach for failed endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), the robustness of the tubes and the high success rate of the technique has made it a routine alternative to PEG. The exceptions are patients awaiting a curative procedure for oro-pharyngeal cancer, where we still use a purely percutaneous approach in order to avoid the risk of tumor implantation into the stoma site [
