Pancreatic cancer represents one of the greatest challenges of biomedical science. In a recent issue of the
World Journal of Surgery, Dr. Fisher [
1] objectively describes the limitations of current screening and therapeutic approaches in the management of this highly fatal disease. With a 97-98% 5-year mortality rate, pancreatic cancer has the poorest prognosis among nearly all cancer types. The 5-year survival rate of ~20%, compared with over 90% for other common cancer types such as breast, colorectal, or stomach for localized disease according to recent US cancer statistics [
