It was a distinct honor and privilege for me to serve as Congress President of the 64th annual meeting of the Japanese Association for Thoracic Surgery (JATS) in 2011. My presidential address was entitled “Professionalism and Cardiothoracic Surgery”. The reason why I chose professionalism as the theme of this address was that conditions in society as a whole have been undergoing transformation since the end of the 1990s, and modification of the entire medical system, including thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, has accompanied it. Meanwhile, a variety of difficulties have been experienced, both in the medical profession and among patients, as changes in the health care system. One of the core values of our specialty, whether in patient care, in education, or in research, is professionalism, and I believe strongly that it is essential for us to display an even higher degree of professionalism than we have already shown. …
