Zusammenfassung

Das Prostatakarzinom ist die häufigste Krebserkrankung des Mannes in westlichen Kulturen. In Deutschland erkrankten 2010 ca. 66.000 Männer neu an Prostatakrebs, knapp 13.000 Patienten verstarben daran. Die Zahl der Neuerkrankungen an Prostatakrebs war in Deutschland zuletzt geringfügig rückläufig und betrug 2012 rund 63.700 Fälle. Das mittlere Erkrankungsalter liegt bei 70 Jahren. Die altersstandardisierte Sterberate ist schon seit etwa Mitte der 1990er Jahre regredient und seit 2007 in Deutschland stabil. Die relative Fünf-Jahres-Überlebensrate beträgt derzeit 93 %. Eine erhöhte Sensibilisierung der Allgemeinbevölkerung in Bezug auf prostataspezifische Früherkennungsmöglichkeiten und Verbesserungen in der Diagnostik (insbesondere PSA-Screening) führten zu einer Zunahme der Prostatakrebsdiagnosen im Frühstadium mit guter Prognose.

Ein hoher Anteil pflanzlicher Nahrung trägt möglicherweise dazu bei, das Progressionsrisiko von Männern mit Prostatakarzinomen zu senken. In einer US-Studie war das Risiko bei ausgeprägter pflanzlicher Ernährung in etwa halbiert.
