Cancer development in the gastric remnant after subtotal or partial gastrectomy has been uncommon, with an overall rate of approximately 1.0% (0.5–2.0%). As the number of long-term survivors increases, however, there is interest in how to prevent this local event or detect it at any early stage. Many questions regarding its etiopathogenesis and risk factors remain unanswered. Among patients with gastric cancer and candidates for partial gastrectomy, how can we predict those who are at high risk of developing remnant gastric cancer? In such cases, an initial total gastrectomy or intensified surveillance after partial gastrectomy can be considered. …
