editorial, provocative as it may appear, addresses certain key issues concerning both basic and applied research, and the issues concern not just surgeons but the whole of the scientific professional community across the physical and life sciences. Dr. Satava cites as pertinent
cause celebre the research in Brain–Machine Interface (BMI) that has been carried out in five leading-edge research institutions within the USA. This research program is currently being jeopardized by congressional scrutiny and probable elimination from this year’s scientific budget at a time when the research program was just producing significant results and against the advice of the scientific community.
