Colon resection for cancer follows standard oncologic principles that include the proximal ligation of the primary arterial supply to the segment harboring the tumor. Variants of the normal arterial anatomy and diseases causing the development of abnormal collateral pathways may be present: If they are not recognized before routine colectomy, there is a high risk of visceral infarction.
