The Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) is typically associated with
E. coli infection with serotype 0157:H7 the most common serotype isolated. Toxogenic
E. coli carry Shiga-1 (Stx1), or Shiga-2 (Stx2) or both Shiga-1 and Shiga-2 toxin (Stx1 + 2). One study by Ardissino et al., entitled “Is Shigatoxin 1 protective for the development of Shigatoxin 2-related hemolytic uremic syndrome in children? Data from the ItalKid-HUS Network” suggests that Stx1 is a very rare cause of STEC-HUS and the risk of STEC-HUS halves in the case of Stx1 + 2 producing
E. coli infection compared with infections where Stx1 is present alone [
