So sollte möglichst in der Planungsphase der Eingriffe auf eine optimale Abstimmung der Medikation und Kontrolle der Risikofaktoren geachtet werden. Eine Optimierung funktioneller Einschränkungen (etwa Atemtraining bei chronisch obstruktiven Atemwegserkrankungen) ist ebenfalls in der präoperativen Phase empfohlen.
