VEGF-C Expression in Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Adenocarcinoma of the Esophagus

In this issue of the Journal, Moebius and colleagues present the results of their investigation of the association between vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGF-C) expression and lymph node metastasis and survival of patients with esophageal cancer. Using immunohistochemical staining techniques and a scoring system that they devised, the authors have demonstrated higher VEGF-C expression in patients with squamous cell cancer and lymph node involvement when compared to those with negative nodes, an association not seen in patients with esophageal adenocarcinoma. They have also noted a tendency toward poorer survival among patients with squamous cell cancers that exhibit high VEGF-C expression. On the basis of these findings, the authors have concluded that VEGF-C may play a role in tumor progression via lymphangiogenesis in squamous cell cancer but not in adenocarcinoma. They also assert that their study supports the notion that adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma should be treated differently. …
