Several recent articles published in the
Journal of Anesthesia suggest that anesthetic agents, sedatives, and opioids may affect cancer relapse, metastasis, and recurrence [
1‐
3]. In addition, we use adrenoceptor agonists or antagonists in the perioperative setting for hemodynamic maintenance in patients undergoing radical cancer surgery. Moreover, the highly selective α2-agonist dexmedetomidine is often used as a sedative in the intensive care unit and sometimes as an adjuvant in paravertebral block to reduce postoperative opioid consumption and the incidence of nausea and vomiting [
4]. However, do we know whether these agents affect prognosis in cancer patients? In this editorial, effects of adrenoceptor modulators on cancer are discussed. …
