Trimodality therapy defined as neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by esophagectomy is one of the standard treatments for patients with locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).
1, 2 The idea that the addition of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy increases the chance of postoperative side-effects, especially cardiopulmonary complications, limit its clinical application. Thus, to clarify risk factors for postoperative cardiopulmonary complications and identify the patients with higher risk of developing these complications is highly necessary. Earlier studies have explored the value of radiation dose-volume histogram (DVH) parameters of lung and heart as predictors of cardiopulmonary complications in patients treated with definitive chemoradiotherapy.
3 Nevertheless, the associations between clinical and DVH parameters with postoperative complications in ESCC patients who receive neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy remains unclear. …
