Access to high-quality surgical services for patients with cancer is critical to ensure equitable healthcare outcomes. Recent advancements in healthcare technology and infrastructure have led to the regionalization of complex oncologic surgical care to specialized facilities. Although centralizing surgical care may yield beneficial postoperative outcomes for certain patients, there are concerns that “over” regionalization may worsen disparities and restrict access for marginalized communities.
1‐3 For instance, recent work from our own research group has shed light on the importance of key social determinants of health on access to high-risk oncologic care.
4 As complex oncologic surgical procedures become increasingly centralized, the impact of regionalization policies on patient travel patterns to receive cancer care needs to be defined. Therefore, the current study utilized geospatial analyses to characterize how regionalization of care to high-volume centers impacted patient travel patterns and total distance spent traveling to receive complex cancer care within the state of California.
