Abstract

Purpose

To compare the intensity and duration self-selected by participants with higher and lower cardiorespiratory fitness to that recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

Methods

Twenty participants performed a maximal test. Participants performed an aerobic self-selected exercise session. The VO2 and power output were recorded continuously during the session. The Feeling Scale (FS) response was recorded. Participants were divided into two groups: lower conditioned (LC) and higher conditioned (HC) according to the VO2Peak.

Results

An ANOVA showed a main effect for moment for %WPeak (F(2.79; 50.35) = 8.28; p < 0.01; ƞ2 = 0.31) and %VO2Res (F(2.86, 51.52) = 17.94; p < 0.01; ƞ2 = 0.49), indicating an increase of the power output and VO2 in both groups. Two participants of the LC group performed an exercise duration lower than recommended by the ACSM, while one participant of the HC group performed an exercise duration higher than recommended by the ACSM.

Conclusion

Self-selected exercise may be used by individuals with different cardiorespiratory fitness levels within the ACSM’s recommended range.
