As a child and adolescent psychiatrist, many of the youth and families I work with have been affected by the mental illness of a parent or loved one. Given that children of parents with major depression or bipolar disorder are at a much greater risk for emotional, behavioral, medical, and social problems (Weissman et al.
1997; Kramer et al.
1998; Birmaher et al.
2009), increasing awareness of the impact of mental illness, not only on the diagnosed individual but also on family members, is imperative. As a result, I was particularly interested when asked to read and review this book, which was written for that purpose. …
