Kit Clark’s candid account of the challenges of being pregnant while working in the prenatal setting highlights a number of important professional issues for genetic counselors. As the majority of those in the genetic counseling profession are women, the personal and professional challenges raised when a counselor is pregnant herself can affect both the pregnant counselor as well as her colleagues, particularly in prenatal settings. The issues Clark eloquently introduces in her paper prompt us to contemplate how pregnancy can affect genetic counseling practice, and they provide a paradigm for discussing these phenomena in our graduate training programs. …
