The authors are encouraged to continue studying their patients undergoing large liposuction to verify their use of low-molecular-weight heparin. However, the number of cases is too small for broad sweeping conclusions about safety or efficacy. According to the studies cited on Table 8, the incidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is variously reported as between 0.29% and 1.4%. Thus, in a series smaller than 300, it is possible that no single case of DVT would be seen statistically. Furthermore, the authors report that three patients had symptoms similar to those for DVT, although their workup was done by “a highly specialized medical team,” and “the multidisciplinary team of critical care specialists” determined that none of the patients had clinical evidence of DVT, and both negative D dimmer and V/Q scans conducted during the emergency room evaluation concluded that Doppler studies were not needed. Can we say specifically that patients with such symptoms have had no DVT or sublethal pulmonary embolism? …
