Hyperglycemia is a very important risk factor for mortality as recently been demonstrated by Godoy et al. [
1]. In their study, the best marker for mortality was patients with intracerebral hemorrhage was the admission blood glucose concentration. Mortality was only 9.8% for those with an admission blood glucose concentration <90 mg/dl. The mortality rate increased to 33% for those with a blood glucose concentration between 126 and 161 mg/dl and 59% for those with blood glucose concentration between 162 and 180 mg/dl. For those with the highest blood glucose (>180 mg/dl) the mortality was the highest (75%). The greater than sevenfold increase in mortality based on admission blood glucose supports the fact that a blood glucose concentration is an additional marker of severity of injury in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage. …
