Abstract
Over the last few decades, there has been a gradual increase in the number of women training and becoming surgeons. However, in spite of the numbers of male and female medical graduates slightly favouring women, the gender imbalance of males significantly outnumbering females entering surgical training persists. There are many influences and challenges faced by female graduates considering a surgical career and in order to make surgery a more appealing career to women, they will need to be addressed by training organisations and workplaces.
