Laparoscopic gastrectomy has been increasingly used recently for the treatment of early gastric cancer in Korea, Japan, and isolated cases in the western world. Evidence is mounting—although emerging from nonrandomized studies—that laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy (LADG) for distal early gastric tumors is feasible, safe, and efficient regarding oncological outcomes and, most interesting for patients, provides better postoperative quality of life (QOL) compared with open distal gastrectomy (ODG). Most recently, a large-scale, retrospective study and a randomized, controlled trial from the same team in Korea have confirmed the safety and superiority of LADG vs. ODG regarding short-term QOL improvement, encouraging western surgeons to perform LADG for early gastric cancer [
