Contrary to common belief, heritability is not a constant for a given disease but depends on the population studied and on environmental factors. By definition, heritability is the proportion of phenotypic variation that is due to variation in genetic values [
1]. When the environment becomes favorable for the development of a disease, the proportion of inherited cases may decrease. For instance, if 99% of a given population smokes, the proportion of inherited lung cancers will decrease. If only very few are exposed to tobacco or other environmental risk factors, a higher proportion of the observed cases will be driven by genetic factors. …
