A brief history of the
Japanese Classification of Esophageal Cancer [
1] is elucidated here. It is not only the Japanese version of the
TNM Classification of Malignant Tumours [
2], but also an heirloom of the Japan Esophageal Society (JES). Many definitions and classifications concerning esophageal cancer have been described. The Japanese versions of the first to ninth editions [
3‐
11] were prepared by the Japanese Society for Esophageal Diseases (JSED), which was the predecessor of the JES. They were named the “
Guide Lines for Clinical and Pathologic Studies on Carcinoma of the Esophagus.” In 2003, the Japanese Society for Esophageal Diseases (JSED) changed its name to the Japan Esophageal Society. The Japanese version of its 10th edition [
12] was published in 2007, and the following year its English version [
1] was published under the title of the “
Japanese Classification of Esophageal Cancer” in order to distinguish it from the
Guidelines for Diagnosis and Treatment of Carcinoma of the Esophagus, the first edition of which was published in 2000 [
13]. Many guidelines concerning the treatment of esophageal cancer have been described. …
