Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have had a long-standing interest in basic and applied immunology. Consequently Penn has been, and continues to be, an exceptionally strong research environment for immunologists at all career stages including pre-doctoral students. Indeed, in the 1970s, Dr. Fred Karush in Penn’s Microbiology Department recognized correctly that immunology would come to influence a wide range of scientific and medical disciplines. Consequently, Dr. Karush worked to establish the first PhD program devoted specifically for training immunologists, now known as the Immunology Graduate Group. This approach contrasts with programs at other institutions, which are components of academic departments that specialize in microbiology and immunology and related fields. …
