Iodine is essential for development of the brain in fetal life as well as in childhood. It has been determined that 90% of the brain develops from 3 mo in pregnancy till 2 y of age. Hence, optimal iodine nutrition is absolutely essential. In India, iodine is naturally deficient in the soil and its importance was conclusively proved by Prof. V Ramalingaswamy in a pioneering study conducted in Kangra Valley of Himachal Pradesh, India [1]. …
