The patellofemoral joint and its historical roots: the Lyon School of Knee Surgery

The practice of systematic analysis of knee pathology has been introduced by the Lyon School of Knee Surgery since decades and has contributed to the advancement of knowledge in the field of patellofemoral pathology. In the early 1960s, the godfathers of the Lyon School of Knee Surgery, Albert Trillat (Fig. 1a) and Henri Dejour (Fig. 1b) presented some of the basic principles on knee surgery. They start to organize the Lyon Knee Surgery Course (‘Les Journées Lyonnaises de Chirurgie du Genou’) in 1971, and then, this meeting was regularly held until now. This meeting was well reputed for the quality of its clinical presentations [14] and by the fact that the results presented were a unique review of the Lyon’s experience. In 1987, this course has permitted the progressive investigation of patellofemoral disorders and was the first course dedicated exclusively to the patellofemoral joint (Fig. 2).
