The hereditary metabolic disorder variegate porphyria (VP) may present with an acute porphyric attack, porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT)-like lesions or with a combination of both. However, many patients remain asymptomatic. Triggering factors include drugs, alcohol, diets, menstruation as well as stress. Association is described with hepatocellular carcinoma. Precipitation of an acute attack of VP by hepatic-spread malignant disease is rarely reported in the literature. …
