The empirical use of broad-spectrum antibiotics provides good coverage for most pathogens during the first days of therapy for presumed bacterial infections. Once culture results and susceptibility tests are available, however, clinicians have the opportunity to narrow the spectrum and simplify antimicrobial therapy.
