Some comments on the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus

In 2010, the Japan Diabetes Society (JDS) presented a new report on the classification and diagnosis of diabetes mellitus in which the wide use of HbA1c was proposed for making the diagnosis [
1]. This is the fourth report by the JDS on this subject, the first report being published in 1970 [
2]. These four JDS reports [

4] retain the same principle regarding the concept of diabetes and the clinical use of the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) as a diagnostic tool, which differs somewhat from reports by the WHO and American Diabetes Association (ADA) [
