Sometimes, obstruction of a bowel segment occurs, requiring colonic resection. In cases of pronounced ileus with chronic stasis requiring deep rectal anastomosis, resection with anastomosis and defunctioning colostomy appears to provide the best solution for initial surgical therapy. One disadvantage of this two-stage approach is the slight risk of developing diversion colitis with symptoms such as blood and mucous discharge, frequently accompanied by abdominal pain.
