Ultrasonography remains the most easily accessible imaging modality available to image the fetal and newborn brain. MR imaging has been used increasingly over the past decade to image the fetal brain, but the conventional T1- and T2-weighted study has many limitations. New techniques such as diffusion-weighted imaging, proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy and functional MRI are being investigated in research protocols in some centres. Their contribution is still under evaluation and their safety in the fetus remains to be determined.
