Once upon a time there was an old man who used to take regular walks on the beach. One day, after a big storm, he found the beach littered with starfish as far as the eye could see. Then he noticed a small boy who kept bending down to pick up an object and throw it into the sea. ‘Good morning!’ the old man called out. ‘May I ask what you are doing?’ The young boy called back: ‘Throwing starfish into the sea. The tide has washed them up onto the beach and they’re stuck. When the sun gets high, they’ll die unless I throw them back.’ The old man replied, ‘But there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. I’m afraid you won’t make much of a difference.’ The boy bent down, picked up yet another starfish and threw it as far as he could into the sea. Then he turned, smiled and said, ‘I made a difference to that one!’ [1] (Fig. 1)
