Otokonien

Zusammenfassung

Otokonien sind kalzitbasierte Nanokomposits (>90 % Kalzit) mit einem geringen Anteil organischen Materials (<10 %). Sie weisen eine durchschnittliche Größe von etwa 10 µm auf. Die äußere Struktur aller Otokonien in Utrikulus und Sakkulus ist ähnlich. Die innere Struktur besteht aus einem Komposit mit unterschiedlicher Volumendichte (dichte verzweigende Strukturen [Arme, „branches“] und weniger dichter umgebender „Bauch“-Bereich [„belly“]). Intakte Otokonien lassen sich eindeutig nur mittels Elektronenmikroskopie identifizieren. Im Falle morphologischer Veränderungen (z. B. infolge „Degeneration“) kann der Ursprung der Probe bereits aus kleinsten Mengen mit Hilfe physikalischer und chemischer Analysemethoden zugeordnet werden. Die Kalzitkomponente der Otokonien reagiert bei chemischen Einwirkungen sehr empfindlich, was zu morphologischen Veränderungen führt. Eine „Degeneration“ der Otokonien kann in vitro durch pH-Wert-Veränderungen, Elektrolytverschiebungen sowie durch Einwirkung komplexierender Agenzien objektiv nachvollzogen werden. Diese drei Hauptprozesse führen dann zu irreversiblen morphologischen Veränderungen. Künstliche (biomimetische) Otokonien lassen sich als Otokonienmodell nutzen, um Wachstums- und Zerfallsprozesse zu untersuchen.
