Abstract
The goal of management of wounds is the return of patients to their usual function as soon as possible. In the community, there are several conditional elements in this management goal — the patient does not exist in isolation, and medical or social conditions may influence the optimal wound-healing process. Fundamental issues, for example, are: (i) the definition of the patient’s usual activity level; (ii) what minimum maintenance activity might be necessary to maintain independence; and (iii) the influence of the proposed management plan on existing medical conditions. These factors must be assessed before deciding that the patient’s wound is most suitably managed in the community.
