Neoadjuvant systemic therapy (NST) is commonly used in the treatment of locally advanced breast cancer to facilitate breast conservation surgery. Findings have shown that breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) accurately assesses residual breast cancer after completion of NST, thereby serving as the imaging gold standard for providing information to guide surgical planning.
1 Contrast-enhanced spectral mammography (CESM) provides a two-dimensional mammographic image after administration of iodinated contrast material, leveraging assessment of tumor neovascularity similar to MRI. Previous studies have shown that CESM has a diagnostic accuracy comparable with that of breast MRI.
2 However, little data are available on the performance of CESM compared with breast MRI in the assessment of residual breast cancer after completion of NST. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the two imaging methods in assessing the size of residual breast cancer after NST, with surgical pathology as the gold standard comparator.
