In this article Dr. John Penning presents expert commentary on a prototype patient-controlled analgesia apparatus described by Dr. Keeri-Szanto in the legacy Canadian Anaesthetists’ Society Journal, published in 1971. The prototype utilized a compact, relatively inexpensive syringe driven motor mechanism - a system that could be employed with safety, for the first time, on surgical wards. …
