‘Robotic Surgery’ is increasingly debated in surgical circles. The reality is, however, that we are nowhere near the era of true robotic surgery, and what we are actually debating are advanced laparoscopic devices or ‘tele-manipulators’. Whichever English definition one chooses for the term ‘robot’, the consistent qualification is a machine that is able to undertake tasks ‘automatically’, whether this be programmed or independently.
