An 8-year-old boy applied to our pediatric nephrology department because of a first episode of gross hematuria. He had never had a similar complaint before. There was no recent history of infection or complaints of fever, dysuria, rash, or arthritis. Past history revealed delivery at 38 weeks of gestation with 2450 g birth weight, hospitalization in the neonatal intensive care for 79 days due to respiratory distress, and umbilical artery and vein catheterization. At the age of 4, he was admitted to the hospital due to bloody vomiting, and was diagnosed as non-cirrhotic portal hypertension due to the presence of stage 3 varicose veins in the esophagus and normal histologic findings in the liver biopsy. Propranolol treatment (1 mg/kg/day) was started and regularly used. Family history was negative for liver or kidney disease. …
