Intervening in the Brain: Changing Psyche and Society is an ambitious book, setting out to describe both the current state of medical technology that has been developed for the express purpose of changing brain functionality and the conceptual, ethical, social and legal issues that arise out of the use of such technology. Though the overall discussion is slightly weighted towards the latter, several of the authors (Gerard Boer, Jörg Fegert, Bart Nuttin and Steffen Rosahl) have primary expertise in medicine or neuroscience and are the principle authors of chapters that touch on this expertise. The remaining authors (Dirk Hartmann, Thorsten Galert and Reinhard Merkel) have primary expertise in either philosophy or law. …
