Paragangliomas are chromaffin cell tumors. They are located in the adrenal medulla in 90% of the cases and in the mediastinum in < 2% of the cases (< 1% of primary cardiac tumors).
1 Most cases are due to mutations of one of three genes (SDHB, SDHC, and SDHD) encoding for subunits of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) or mitochondrial complex II.
