The management of shock can be a daunting endeavour for even the most seasoned front-line resuscitationists. Patients in shock present with similar signs and symptoms despite having different physiologic derangements underlying their clinical presentation. In addition, various shock subtypes can have competing therapeutic goals, leaving clinicians with a small margin for error when making decisions. It is of no surprise then that resuscitationists have gravitated towards hemodynamic guidance systems that can unravel cryptic shock physiology directly at the bedside (i.e.,
point-of-care). Such hemodynamic guidance systems have become deeply entrenched in the culture and practice of resuscitation medicine.
